Coming home to see family around Suva and Nausori usually means landing at Nadi, then a 30–45 minute Fiji Link flight or a 3–4 hour drive across Viti Levu. A whole apartment with a kitchen, laundry and parking near the family makes a long visit feel like home rather than a hotel stay.
This guide is for Fijian families in Australia, New Zealand and North America: how to get from Nadi to Suva and Nausori, what to sort out on arrival, and how to keep everyone together.
Fiji's family abroad
Australia's 2021 census counted about 69,000 people born in Fiji (Wikipedia, citing ABS). New Zealand's 2023 census counted 25,038 people of Fijian ethnicity (Stats NZ), and there are large Fijian communities in the United States, especially around Sacramento (Wikipedia). Many come home for weddings, funerals, Christmas and family milestones.
Flying in: almost everyone lands at Nadi
Most international flights arrive at Nadi International Airport (Tourism Fiji):
From Australia: Fiji Airways from Brisbane (about 3 hours 15 minutes), Sydney (about 4 hours 30), Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide, plus Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar on some routes.
From New Zealand: Fiji Airways from Auckland (about 3 hours), Wellington and Christchurch, plus Air New Zealand from Auckland.
From North America: Fiji Airways from Honolulu, San Francisco and Los Angeles (about 10 hours 30), and Vancouver (about 11 hours 30), plus Air New Zealand from Los Angeles.
Nausori Airport near Suva has only a couple of regional international routes, so plan on Nadi.
