Visiting Family in CWM Hospital or a Private Hospital in Suva: Where to Stay

If someone you love is in CWM Hospital or one of Suva's private hospitals, a quiet, self-contained place to stay nearby makes long days much easier. Nakasi is about 15 km from central Suva on Kings Road, roughly 20 minutes' drive outside peak traffic, and close to the Nakasi and Valelevu health centres.

This guide covers Suva's main hospitals, how to get there from Nakasi and Nausori, and what helps families who are visiting a patient for several days or weeks.

CWM Hospital, Suva

The Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital on Waimanu Road is Fiji's largest and oldest public hospital, opened in 1923. It is the national teaching hospital and the main referral centre for Fiji and the wider Pacific, with emergency, surgery, maternity, neonatal intensive care, paediatrics, mental health, radiology and laboratory services (Ministry of Health).

Australia is funding planning for a new national referral hospital, but as of early 2025 the project was still at the site-selection stage (GHD). For now, CWM remains the main public hospital.

Private hospitals in Suva

  • Oceania Hospitals, 120 Amy Street, Toorak. Opened in 2001 as Suva Private Hospital and renamed in 2019, it is one of the largest private hospitals in the South Pacific (Oceania Hospitals). Its visiting guide lists visiting hours of 6:30–7:00 am and 6:00–7:00 pm, with limits on visitor numbers (visiting guide).

  • Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), Foster Road, Walu Bay. A specialist private hospital covering areas such as cardiology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and urology (PSH).

Visiting rules change and differ by ward, so always check with the hospital before you go.
