Where to Stay in Suva: CBD vs Nasinu vs Nausori

Stay in the Suva CBD if your days are in town, in Nasinu if you need the middle of the corridor, and in Nausori or Nakasi if you are flying from Nausori Airport or want more space for your money. All three sit along the same 20 km stretch of Kings Road, so the right choice depends on where you need to be each morning.

This guide compares the three areas, what is in each, how far apart they are and how traffic affects your plans, then shows where the Garden Flat at SPACES Fiji fits in.

The Suva–Nausori corridor at a glance

  • Suva city: about 94,000 people at the 2017 census, Fiji's capital and main business centre (Wikipedia).

  • Nasinu: 92,043 people in 2017 and the largest municipality in Fiji by land area, more than twice the size of Suva (Wikipedia).

  • Nausori: about 58,000 people in 2017, on the Rewa River, home of Nausori International Airport (City Population).

  • Nakasi: about 15 km from Suva and 5 km from Nausori, within the Nausori town area. Its old name, "9½ Miles", comes from its distance from Suva along Kings Road (Wikipedia).

Suva CBD: best for business days in town

The capital holds Government Buildings, Parliament on Ratu Sukuna Road, Albert Park, the harbour and Kings Wharf, plus diplomatic missions and regional offices. The Suva Municipal Market on Usher Street is one of the biggest produce markets in the South Pacific, open Monday to Friday 6 am to 6 pm and Saturday 6 am to 4:30 pm (Fiji Traveller). USP's main campus is at Laucala Bay.

Good for: meetings in town, short business trips, walking to restaurants. Trade-offs: hotel rooms rather than whole apartments, paid parking, and a long drive to Nausori Airport for early flights.

Nasinu: the middle of the corridor

Nasinu takes in suburbs such as Laucala Beach Estate, Valelevu, Nadera, Caubati, Kinoya, Makoi and Narere. It is home to FNU's main campus and the head offices of the LTA, the Water Authority of Fiji and the Housing Authority (Wikipedia).

Good for: FNU visits, appointments at government agencies, staying between Suva and Nausori. Trade-offs: fewer short-stay options, and Kings Road traffic in both directions at peak times.

Nausori and Nakasi: best for flights, families and space

Nausori is the airport town, with a market and bus terminal that opened in 2015 and the Rewa Bridge linking it towards Suva (Wikipedia). Nakasi is one of Nausori's two main business areas, with supermarkets, takeaways, banks, function halls and Nakasi Market.

Good for: early Fiji Link or Northern Air flights, weddings and family events on this side of the corridor, groups who want a whole house, guests with cars. Trade-offs: about 15 km to central Suva, so allow time for meetings in town.

Traffic: plan around the peaks

The Fiji Roads Authority has said the Suva–Nausori corridor "continues to suffer from severe congestion during peak hours", and named hotspots such as the Makoi lights and the Wainibuku roundabout (Fijivillage, 2025). In practice that means:

  • Going into Suva: leave before the morning rush or after it, and allow extra time.

  • Flying from Nausori: staying on the Nausori side keeps you clear of the worst of the commute.

  • Evenings: heading out of Suva after about 5 pm is the slowest part of the day.

Distances are short: Suva to the airport is about 23 km, roughly 45 minutes (Wikipedia), but the time depends heavily on traffic.

Which area should you choose?

  • Two-day business trip, all meetings in town: Suva CBD.

  • Visiting FNU or a Nasinu office: Nasinu or Nakasi.

  • Early domestic flight, or landing late from the islands: Nausori or Nakasi.

  • Family of four to six, a wedding, or a long stay: a whole apartment in Nakasi or Nausori, with a kitchen, laundry and parking.
